Activity 6

The assignment for this week was hard for me. Study tools are not something we use a lot in Kindergarten. I decided to play around with most of the tools to see how I liked them. I started with Studyblue thinking that I could use it for sight words- using audio or for position words with a picture; however, when I went to do this it required a finical upgrade to be able to use more then just text in your flash cards.

Since I wasn't sure how I would use these tools in Kindergarten I decided to try a couple of the others and just make them more personal, not school related.

Here is a timeline from when my husband and I met to when we got married. I really liked Timetoast's layout abilities. I like that you can view it easily as a timeline or as events in text, without being overwhelmed by either layout. I still haven't thought about how I would really use it with Kindergarten, but feel that it could be a very powerful teaching tool! The only way I could see using it, is as a way to document our class activities. It would be fun way to share with students and parents the main events of the year! One thing I didn't like about it was that you had to put an exact date into it. If you could be more vague about the date it would allow me to use it in more ways, like as a sequencing tool.

I also did a Tagxedo because it reminded me of Wordle and I thought that would be fun to do. I used the lyrics of my wedding song. I can see using this in school for a number of activities! One thing I did with Wordle was to do an adjective lesson where students wrote down adjectives describing each student in the class and then students typed their list into Wordle to see the words that describe them. I think activities like this wold be great to do as a whole class with Tagxedo and then be able to choose your layout!!! It would be a fun way to show what your class had learned about a unit, or you could do a small group author study or character analysis!!

  1. I love the timeline idea. We introduce timelines to first graders. This would be a great tool to use as a whole group. Students looking for a challenge could use it with assistance from an adult. Also, what a thoughtful idea to use your wedding song lyrics. You could frame the Tagxedo for a wedding gift!

  2. I can definitely see how these tools would be more challenging to use with kindergarteners. I love another commenter's idea of personal life timelines. It might be a fun September parent/child assignment to put together a list of 5 important life events for that child (birth, first vacation, first tooth, whatever) and then pull in parent volunteers to help put the events into timelines on Timetoast, all while reinforcing sequencing. Great work!

  3. I like that you are thinking about improving your classroom practice and your personal life by using these web 2.0 tools. There are so many available-- we don't have to use them all, but it is nice to know that there are some out there that can make us more efficient and effective!

  5. Love your timeline Virginia, and I like Amanda's idea about the parent/child timeline of significant life events as an early year activity. I will not be showing your timeline to my significant other however, as she will certainly have something to say about the comparative length of time between meeting and proposal!! ;-)
